Writing Advice: Step Away

Know when to step back from a story and take a break. If the words aren’t coming, that may be your brain’s way of telling you that you need to rest and recharge.

Get up and walk around. Leave the house and get some fresh air. Go watch TV. Go take a hot shower or soak in a aromatherapy bath. Turn on some loud music and dance like no one is watching. Do something to get the blood flowing and to relax yourself.

Chances are, once you do take the break, you’ll be ready to get back to it the second you sit down at the computer again.

  1. I hear that! Had to step away from a story on Tuesday, when I just couldn't get the story to make sense — plot was all screwed up. Stepped away and voila, this morning I am able to see what I need to do to fix it.
