He’s a dog with a bone and she knows just where to bury it.
Tracy has a stalker who is dredging up a past best left forgotten so he can torment her with it. She hires Kaiser, a dog-shifter, to track the culprit and mete out justice. “Kaiser. Interesting name. Where is he?”
“Waiting outside.” Guardian pushed a folder across the desk. “This is a standard agreement of services. What you can expect and what is expected of you.”
“Okay.” Tracy took the folder and opened it to the single sheet of paper within. It was a straightforward waiver of responsibility. Guardian supplied a body to work a job with no guarantees. “This is kind of cold, isn’t it?”
“I’ve explained what Kaiser is, and you have told me what you want him to do. The job is for an indeterminate amount of time as a live-in position. I cannot predict, and do not care to predict, what can and cannot happen in those circumstances. He will do what you requested. Beyond that, the rest is up to you two.”
“Great.” The word dripped sarcasm. Guardian was throwing Tracy to a wolf — as it were — and absolving herself of guilt in one move. If Tracy turned down Guardian’s conditions, she would have to fend for herself. Teddy had already told her about Guardian’s mandate to not interfere any longer. Kaiser was Tracy’s only option. Well, Kaiser or a real dog.
Guardian held out a pen.
“Don’t I get to meet him first?”
“If you like.” Guardian set the pen on the desk. “Kaiser, come.”
Tracy turned in her seat when the office door opened. “Oh.” The word came out as the barest whisper, but she knew Kaiser had heard her from the way he smirked and arched an eyebrow at her.
Two seconds in the room together, and she already knew this man would be trouble. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, so Tracy had a perfect view of his hard, washboard abs. His frayed jeans rode low on his hips. Too low.
She jerked her gaze up to his face. It didn’t matter where she looked. From his short-cropped brown hair to his bare feet, he was a gorgeous specimen. The way he carried himself, striding into the room as if everything inside it belonged to him, spoke of arrogance. He swept his ice blue eyes over Tracy and she had to fight the urge to cross her arms over her breasts. She was wearing a business suit but Kaiser’s intense scrutiny made her feel as if he could see beneath her clothing.
“You called?” Kaiser’s rough voice sent a shiver up Tracy’s spine that tightened her nipples.
Guardian said, “This is Tracy. She has an issue with an intruder who seems to be invisible to normal means of detection. You’ll be protecting her as well as finding the culprit and bringing him to justice.”
“Sounds easy enough.” Kaiser stuck his hand out. “Nice to meet you.”
Tracy shot to her feet, not wanting to be eye-level with his hips, and shook his hand. Mistake. Touching him finished the job his voice had started. Her heartbeat sped up and a wanting tingle started between her legs.
“We should get along fine.” Kaiser used his hold on her hand to pull her toward him.
She almost followed his lead until she realized what was happening. Snatching her hand back, Tracy put some distance between them. Teddy had mentioned shifters wanting sex but he hadn’t said they inspired the longing in others as well. She’d never felt anything this strong around Teddy. He was attractive but Tracy hadn’t had the inclination to throw herself at him. Not like now.
